Lesson: Last week, the students learned how to write an informative paragraph. This week, they will apply these skills in an informative writing assignment. Using their reading notes, they will write an informative paragraph about their biography character. They will choose an important part of that person's life to write about. The students chose their topics today and began their rough drafts. We talked about the do's and don'ts of a topic sentence and looked at several examples. Then the students used an outline to start their rough draft. Click here for a copy of the outline. Homework: Informative paragraph due at the beginning of class Wednesday Lesson: Today the students had a unique opportunity to learn about volunteering and writing in action! Two high school students came to our class to share their experiences with the Riff Room at the high school and their Mercy Storytelling Project.
The Riff Room is a location at the high school where students can receive one-on-one writing assistant from peer tutors. Our speakers today are both volunteers at the Riff Room and shared their experiences. To learn more about the Riff room, click here. The volunteers at the Riff Room have created a fantastic service project. The project directly relates to what we are doing in reading and language arts class in sixth grade - reading and writing about biographies! Here is the project description from their website:

Lesson: We started the lesson by reviewing the color-coding activity from yesterday. We reviewed the three parts of a paragraph and color-coded each paragraph as a class. Then the students listened to a presentation about how to write a topic sentence. They took notes in their composition notebooks. They also glued a graphic organizer in their notes to help them write topic sentences. Together we used the graphic organizer to write several topic sentences. Homework: None |
