Lesson: Today the students practiced their how-to speeches. The students will be presenting their how-to papers Tuesday through Thursday. We talked about good presentation and audience skills. The students partnered up with several different students and practiced their speeches. They gave each other compliments and suggestions for improvement. Homework: Practice your speech Warm Up: None
Lesson: Today the students finished typing/handwriting their final drafts. It was due by the end of class. Next week, the students will be presenting their how-to papers. We will practice on Monday and the students will present Tuesday-Thursday. They are welcome to use note cards with their speech, but that is not required. They also can create any kind of visual (Power Point, Prezi, poster, movie, demonstration, etc.) to add to their how-to presentation. As a class, we practiced writing attention grabbing first sentences. I suggested they ask a question as their first sentence. In the next sentence, stating their purpose would be the answer to the question. We practiced writing creative questions using the example of how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I modeled writing an introduction paragraph. I color coded it so they could see each required part. "Are you tired of going hungry when your parents aren't home to make dinner? I will explain how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for a quick, easy, and nutritious snack. To make the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you will need bread, peanut butter, jelly, a knife, and plate." Lesson: Lesson: Today the students started the process planning sheet for their how-to papers. After some group discussion, the students picked their topics. We talked about attention grabbing first sentences, the audience and purpose of an essay, and other components of the introduction paragraph. After sharing an example, the students completed the introduction section of their process planning sheet. We practiced writing procedural steps. With the time left in class, the students began writing their own steps. We did all of this on the Process Planning sheet. We viewed the following presentation slides.
