Lesson: Today I gave the students a sample argumentative prompt. The prompt was: Should people recycle? As a class, we wrote a claim and brainstormed various reasons to support the claim. They completed their brainstorming on page 7 of their packet. As a class, we voted on the three most persuasive reasons, and the students added these to the persuasion map on page 8 of their packet. Tomorrow, the students will find evidence to support each reason. Eventually, they will turn this group brainstorming activity into a learning check to show what they know about argumentative paragraphs!

Lesson: Today the students learned about the three parts of an argument - claim, reason, and evidence. The students wrote the following definitions in their argumentative packet.
Then the students broke down the parts of an argument by identifying the claim, reason, and evidence in two sample paragraphs. On page 6 of their packet, the students color-coded two argumentative paragraphs using the following key:

During Round 3, the students used page 6 in their packet to identify the persuasive technique. Additionally, they cited evidence from the commercial to back up their choice. The students practiced identifying examples of pathos, logos, ethos, and kairos in their packet. Then we watched several commercials. The students had to name the persuasive techniques that were used in each advertisement.

Lesson: Today we talked about our new unit - argumentative writing! The students were given an argumentative writing packet and they added this term to their vocabulary page.
After discussing the differences between argumentative and persuasive writing, we talked about how advertisements use different persuasive techniques. The class shared examples advertisements they have seen that were particularly persuasive. We looked at some sample advertisements and talked about what made each one persuasive. We also talked about who each ad was designed for. This introduced their next vocabulary term - targeted audience.

Lesson: Today we began our new unit - argumentative writing! Warm Up: Use the 3-Step Process to determine if the underlined word is an adjective or an adverb.
Lesson: Today I passed back the adjective and adverb assessment from yesterday and we went through the test as a class. All students who were not proficient had time to revise their test if they needed to make corrections. If the students finished early, they worked on homework, completed adjective and adverb puzzles, or chose a language arts enrichment activity. Homework: Finish revisions |
