After this discussion, the students finished their final draft of their Bio-Poem. For a more detailed description of this assignment, see yesterday's post!
Homework: Final Bio-Poem due tomorrow, Writing example due in class on Friday
Warm Up: Make a word web in your notebook. Think of how your family uses writing at home and how people write at work. Add as many examples that you can think of to your web. Lesson: We continued our discussion about how people use writing in their everyday lives. We brainstormed a long list of writing examples, ranging from articles to lists, calendars, cartoons, cards, recipes, speeches, plays, and so on. See the images below to see what the students thought of! They are required to bring a writing sample from home to class on Friday. I encouraged them to think of their family uses writing at home and how different people in their jobs use writing. We will add each example to a large bulletin board so they can see all the kinds of writing we use in our lives.

Warm Up: The students filled out a "What Kind of Learner Am I?" questionnaire. They turned the questionnaire into the basket.
Lesson: The students worked on writing bio-poems. A bio-poem is a poem you write about yourself. The students were given a worksheet rough draft. For a copy of this handout, click here! If they did not finish the rough draft in class, it is homework. Some students began working on the final draft of their bio-poems. They must take their poem rough draft and put it together in a colored, polished final draft. We will work on final drafts tomorrow in class. Homework: Finish your bio-poem rough draft, bring a writing sample Warm Up: The students picked up several language arts resources and their composition notebooks.
Lesson: Today we sorted through several language arts resources and set up our composition notebooks for the year. The students will use their notebooks every day in class for a variety of writing tasks. Each Mod has a place in the classroom to keep their notebooks, so technically they never need to leave the classroom or get lost! :) They pasted several resources and glued them in their notebooks. These resources included notebook rules, a clock partner sheet, and several reference pages that that we will refer to throughout the year. Then the students set up their clock buddies sheet. We use this as an easy way to create pairs for partnered activities, while avoiding the problem of students always have the SAME partners. Their sheet had a clock face with slots for names extending from each our on the dial. They went around the classroom and found a different partner for each slot. We will use these regularly throughout the year! Homework: None Welcome to day three! Today the students learned more about classroom expectations and the language arts daily routine. We discussed arriving to class, their language arts materials, several school policies, and toured the classroom. The students asked a lot of great questions! We began class today with a get-to-know-you activity. The students each received two Jolly Ranchers. The color of the Jolly Rancher matched a fact they had to share about themselves. For example,
Hello, and welcome to a new school year! Today was a great start to what I am sure will be a wonderful year in language arts. Today the students got to know the classroom. We began class by taking attendance and writing in our agendas. Each teacher has an agenda board in their classroom and the students will fill them in every Monday. This a great resource to use to see what we are doing in class and to check in on homework and other important due dates. Then I told the students a little bit more about myself. We found that we had a lot of things in common and I made some great connections! After getting to know me, we had a classroom scavenger hunt. They got up and moved around and hunted for things in the classroom. We had a lot of fun with this and hopefully they feel more comfortable with where things are. Please download the attachment if you would like a copy. Tomorrow we will continue learning about language arts and will discuss classroom rules and expectations. Here's to a great year!
