Lesson: Today the students wrapped up editing their letter rough drafts. Starting next week, the students will write their final letters! After editing, the students completed a quick formative assessment (knowledge check) about editing. Homework: None Warm Up: In your notebook, write the sentence below, including the mistakes! Use editing marks to correct the sentence. There are 8 mistakes.
Warm Up: We continued editing their rough drafts. I used a PowerPoint that walked them through one editing task at a time. Using a red pen, they revised their letters according to each editing task. We will finish the editing PowerPoint in class tomorrow. For a copy of the editing checklist PowerPoint, click here. Homework: I challenged each student to have at least one other person read their paper. They are welcome to have a teacher, peer, family member, or parent read through and revise with them. Warm Up: Edit the following sentence using editing marks.

After reviewing the editing marks, we practiced editing several short sentences using these editing marks. Then I passed out a sample letter. As a class, we editing the beginning of the letter. We will continue this activity tomorrow.

Lesson: Today the students finished their letter rough drafts. If they did not finish them in class, the assignment is homework for Monday. I explained how a rubric works and we talked about how they can achieve each level in their writing. Their rubrics are leveled by proficiency. Here is a description of each level:

Lesson: Today we read through the student letter on pages 4-5 of their letter packets. First, we discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the letter. The students made a t-chart on page 5 and wrote these observations in the chart. We discussed these ideas as a class. Then we labeled and color-coded the important elements of a letter. The students did the following tasks:
