Lesson: We started class by reviewing and checking in the incorrect letter activity. The letter was missing parts or the parts were in the wrong place. The students had to circle the mistakes and describe what needed to be done to correct it. We discussed the answers as a class. Then I explained the difference between a personal letter and a form letter. I showed them examples of personal and form letters that we have received in the past. When students send their letters, sometimes they get back form letters. These letters are usually generic and standardized and aren't personalized for the individual student. Then I showed them examples of personal letters, where the writer made personal connections and directly addressed the student. I asked them which type of letter they would prefer to get back, and they clearly recognized that a personal letter is much more meaningful. I connected this to their letters. I told them that if they make personal connections, think deeply about their writing, and put their heart into their thoughts, they are much more likely to receive a personal letter. We will start their rough drafts next week!
