Warm Up: The students read silently.
Lesson: The students practiced their how-to speeches. The students will be presenting Wednesday-Friday. Homework: Practice speech Lesson: The students worked on their final drafts for their how-to papers. Here are the requirements for the final draft:
The final draft is due at the end of class on Friday. Next week, the students will be presenting their how-to papers. The students may create any kind of visual (Power Point, Prezi, poster, movie, demonstration, etc.) to add to their how-to presentation. This is not required, but there will be extra credit points available. The students are allowed to have note cards but they will not be allowed to read off their speech. Homework: Finish final draft Warm Up: The students practiced reading their how-to essays out loud to check for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. Lesson: The students' rough drafts were due today. They spent class editing and revising their rough drafts. The students used a self and peer revising checklist. They had to do each revising task and check it off when they completed that task. Once they were done with the self-revising section, they paired up with a peer and revised their peer's paper. Lesson: The students wrote their introduction paragraphs for their how-to papers. The introduction has the following requirements:
As a class, we practiced writing attention grabbing first sentences. I suggested they ask a question as their first sentence. Stating their purpose would be the answer to their question. We practiced writing creative questions. Using the example of how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I modeled writing an introduction paragraph. I color coded it so they could see each required part. "Are you tired of going hungry when your parents aren't home to make dinner? I will explain how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for a quick, easy, and nutritious snack. To make the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you will need bread, peanut butter, jelly, a knife, and plate." Homework: Finish your introduction paragraph Warm Up: Number your warm up 1-7. Lesson: Today the students continued working on the planning description sheet for their how-to papers. The students finished listing the steps for their procedure. When students finished, they shared with partners so their partner could check for missing steps. All but the conclusion section of the planning sheet is due tomorrow. Lesson: Today the students started the planning process of their how-to papers. After some group discussion, the students picked their topics. We talked about the audience and purpose of an essay. After sharing an example, the students wrote the purpose of their essay. We practiced writing procedural steps. With the time left in class, the students began writing their own steps. Warm Up: Rewrite the following sentence. Correct the errors in the sentence.
Lesson: The students brainstormed topics for their how-to speech. In their composition notebooks, the students made a t-chart. The left side was titled "My Ideas" and the right side was titled "Group Ideas." The students spent class writing down paper topics in the "My Ideas" column. Tomorrow, the students will start off class by sharing their ideas. They will write any new ideas in the "Group Ideas" column. The students used this website to brainstorm ideas.
