Lesson: Today we read through the student letter on pages 4-5 of their letter packets. First, we discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the letter. The students made a t-chart on page 5 and wrote these observations in the chart. We discussed these ideas as a class.
Then we labeled and color-coded the important elements of a letter. The students did the following tasks:
- Circle and label the five parts of a letter.
- Read through the introduction paragraph. Circle where the author stated their name, school, where they were from, and the purpose of the letter.
- In yellow highlighter, highlight each sentence where the author made a personal connection with the audience.
- In another color, highlight each question that the author asked.
We discussed each of these tasks. The students will write a practice letter tomorrow and they will start their rough drafts on Wednesday.
