- Grab a new packet from the front table.

- In your composition notebook - Compare your new argumentative packet to your informative packet. What similarities do you notice between both packets? What differences do you notice?
Lesson: Today we talked about our new unit - argumentative writing! The students were given an argumentative writing packet and they added this term to their vocabulary page.
- Argumentative Writing: Argumentative writing is writing that uses evidence to convince the reader to think or act in a certain way.
After discussing the differences between argumentative and persuasive writing, we talked about how advertisements use different persuasive techniques. The class shared examples advertisements they have seen that were particularly persuasive. We looked at some sample advertisements and talked about what made each one persuasive. We also talked about who each ad was designed for. This introduced their next vocabulary term - targeted audience.
- Targeted Audience: The person or group of people a piece of writing is intended to reach.
