Warm Up: The students were given a bag of cards. They had to sort the cards into words that were nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We checked this as a class.
Lesson: We discussed why writers use adjectives and the effect they have on our writing. We talked about the importance of using sensory language. Then the students had to respond to a quick write. In their quick write, they had to explain their perfect day using plenty of adjectives and sensory language. I shared my own example and gave them the rest of class to tell their story. Homework: None Warm Up: The students searched for adjectives in their SQUIRT books. We shared our findings as a class.
Lesson: Today the students learned about article adjectives. Article adjectives are the words a, an, and the. We discussed the rules for when to use each article adjective. Then the students practiced this on pages 7-9 in their parts of speech packet. Homework: Finish pages 7-9 Warm Up: Write down every adjective you see in this paragraph. You DO NOT need to write the whole paragraph, just the adjectives!
My family likes to go camping every summer. We like to sit under the bright stars shining through the dark sky. We like to listen to the chirping crickets and the crackling fire. Sticky marshmallows on melted chocolate fill our hungry tummies. At night, we snuggle in our warm, cozy sleeping bags and tell scary stories until we fall asleep. Lesson: Today the students worked on pictures to decorate our adjective bulletin board. They each got a piece of poster paper and decorated it with adjectives about themselves. The students each got a picture with their poster. I will print these out and put them on our bulletin board. Stay tuned for a picture of the completed bulletin board! Homework: Pages 5-6 in packet Warm Up: Come up with a describing word to describe each of the following nouns. (For example… apple – red, shiny, hard, tasty, juicy)
Lesson: The students shared their describing words from their warm up. Together each class made an impressive list of describing words! Then the students learned that these words are called adjectives. We wrote the definition and several examples of this new part of speech in our flip-books. An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. An adjective answers the questions 1) Which one? 2) What kind and 3) How many? See the images below for examples. Then the students worked on pages 1-4 in their new adjectives and adverbs packet. Homework: Finish pages 1-4 Today the students took the Subject and Predicate Test. Check PowerSchool over the weekend to see grades!
Warm Up: The students completed their study guides and we corrected them as a class.
Lesson: We spent class reviewing for the subject and predicate test that is tomorrow. I placed review questions all around the 6th grade commons. The students rotated around the commons and completed each review task. Homework: Study for the test!!! Warm Up: The students completed the front side of their subject and predicate study guide. For a copy of the study guide, click here.
Lesson: We reviewed subjects and predicates. The students will have a test on Friday. We practiced these skills on pages 23-25 in their parts of speech packet. Homework: Finish pages 23-25 Warm Up: Write the following sentence. Label the SN and V. Draw a line between the subject and predicate.
Lesson: Today the students learned about simple and complete subjects. The complete subject of a sentence tells who or what the sentence is about, including all the descriptive words that describe the subject. The simple subject of a sentence also tells who or what the sentence is about, but it doesn't have all the descriptive words. The simple subject is just a single noun. For example:
