Lesson: Today the students learned three rules for using commas and preposition phrases. Click here to view the PowerPoint. The students took notes in their packets.
Rule #1: If the sentence begins with a prepositional phrase, use a comma.
- On Thursday, we went to the park.
- During the movie, we ate popcorn.
- Before lunch, our class had recess.
Rule #2: If there is more than one prepositional phrase in a row, use a comma.
- On Thursday, during the day, we went to the park.
- During the movie, in our seats, we ate popcorn.
- After class, and before lunch, our class had recess.
Rule #3: If the phrase is in the middle of the sentence, and the sentence makes sense without the phrase, place a comma on both sides of the phrase.
- My father, with his fear of crowds, did not come to the movie.
- That dog, in the middle, is our new dog.
