- Write a simple sentence.
- Write a compound sentence.
- Rewrite the following sentence. Put a line between the subject and predicate. The angry cat furiously hissed at the dog.
Lesson: Today we practiced separating sentences into subjects and predicates. We checked their homework from last night (P 88-89) and did some examples as a class. Then the students learned about simple and complete subjects. The complete subject of a sentence tells who or what the sentence is about, including all the descriptive words that describe the subject. The simple subject of a sentence also tells who or what the sentence is about, but it doesn't have all the descriptive words. The simple subject is just a single noun.
For example:
- The small, yellow kitten meowed at the dog. "The small, yellow, kitten" is the complete subject.
- The small, yellow kitten meowed at the dog. "Kitten" is the simple subject.
