Lesson: Today we reviewed the difference between figurative and literal language. We watched a Captain Literally video about a superhero who makes it his job to catch people using the word "literally" incorrectly. Then the students looked at several sentences in partners to decide if the sentence used literal or figurative language. Then I read aloud an Amelia Bedelia book, a story about a character who is known for taking figurative language literally.
Then the students learned about the first type of figurative language - personification! Personification is when an author gives an idea, object, or animal human traits. For example:
- The moon smiled down at us.
- The delicious cupcakes were calling to me.
- The snow wrapped a blanket around the town.
