Lesson: Today the students completed the backside of the worksheet from yesterday's lesson. On this side of the worksheet, the students had to create pictures to symbolize each line of the Preamble. Once the students finished their worksheet, they had time to practice reciting the Preamble. Homework: None Warm Up:
Lesson: Today the students learned more about the Preamble. We listened to the Preamble song and practiced reciting the Preamble to learn the words. To listen to this song, click here. Together, we rewrote the Preamble in student-friendly language. Click here for the presentation and click here for the worksheet. Then the students practiced reciting the Preamble using this song and the Great Preamble Race Game. The Great Preamble Race is a game board full of empty spaces, where the students must work to reach the finish line. To earn a space on the game board, the students can recite the Preamble to an adult or student. Each time they recite the Preamble, they get a signature on their game board. If they explain the meaning of one of the phrases, they get an extra square signed. See the image below! Lesson: First, the students filled out a Constitution Table of Contents. They pasted these sheets in their composition notebook. Click here for a copy of the Constitution Table of Contents. Then the students learned about the Preamble, or the introduction of the Constitution. The students received a copy of the Preamble, which they glued in their notebook. Tomorrow we will listen to the Preamble song to learn the words. Homework: None Warm Up: What document explains how our government works?
Lesson: First, we finished the "What type of government do we have?" note-taker from yesterday. For a more detailed description of this activity, read yesterday's post. Then the students learned about the general format of the Constitution. I used a PowerPoint, and the students took notes on the structure of the Constitution. On another worksheet, the students filled out a Constitution Table of Contents. They glued these resources in their composition notebooks.

Lesson: Today we began the first day of the government unit. Over the next several weeks, the students will learn about the basic structure of the United States government. The students learned about the type of government that we have: a constitutional republic. We read two pages in the textbook We the People, and the students learned what these terms mean. The students filled out a note-taker that identified some of these big ideas. See the graphic below, or click here for a copy of this note-taker! We completed the first half of the note-taker. The students pasted this sheet in their composition notebook. Homework: None Lesson: Today the students learned about the daily social studies routine. Each day, the students will begin social studies with a warm up. I showed the students the warm up sheet they will receive next week. Then we set up their social studies notebook by numbering the pages and creating a table of contents. Lastly, the students watched an episode of CNN 10.
