Lesson: Today was an exciting day in Social Studies! The students have been working on writing their own bills this week. Today we held a session of Congress to vote on their bills. As the students walked into the classroom, they were given a name tag that said "Congressman" or "Congresswoman" and their last name. We divided the class into the Senate and the House of Representatives. Then each group came up and presented their bill to Congress. The Senate and House each discussed and then voted on each bill. If the bill was passed in both houses by a two thirds majority, the bill was passed onto the president (Me!). I chose to veto or pass each bill. If the bill was vetoed, it was sent back to Congress and they had the chance to override my veto. Some of the bills were made into "laws" by the end of class. It was a great day learning about the legislative process!
